Melissa Dougherty Anderson

October is National Women's Small Business Month!

Each week, we will be featuring a female Connects member who owns their own business.

Melissa Dougherty Anderson Law, LLC. When and why did you start your own business? I started practicing law in 2007 & was working full time for the Department of Revenue, Division of Racing Events when I was regulating the States horse racing industry. My boss said I could have my own practice on the side - as long as it did not conflict. The idea had never occurred to me, until he made the suggestion. So in 2013, I chose to open an Estate Planning practice. It started out as just nights and weekends, drafting for friends and family. Then word of mouth spread, and I started making more money in my "side gig" than in my day job for the government. That is when I made the transition to focus on my private practice full time. What is the secret to your success? Multi-tasking. I am a busy wife and mother. It is all a great balancing act. I drop my son off at school, get in a daily workout, and then my day begins and I work through lunch until I pick my son up from school. I am often known for taking work calls from the sidelines at soccer, baseball and basketball games:) My clients are all wonderful and understanding. I also write a weekly online blog and am involved in the community. I volunteer as a Golden Chamber of Commerce Ambassador and am currently in the Leadership Golden 2021 class.
